Longbridge, May 2005, Nanjing Automobile Corporation (NAC) purchased
the MG brand, the manufacturing rights to the MG range of vehicles
and assets of the collapsed MG Rover organisation in a deal worth
in excess of £50 million.
So who is NAC? NAC is China’s oldest and most respected motor
manufacturer with a history dating back to 1947.
Following its acquisition of the physical assets of the MG Rover
company, the MG brand name, and Powertrain Limited, Nanjing MG Automobile
Co., Ltd (NAC MG Ltd) founded its headquarters and manufacturing
facility in the Pukou High-Tech Development Zone outside Nanjing
on March 27, 2006 with the laying of the first foundation stone.
For the UK, the MG brand home will again be at Longbridge, where
the famous TF will be produced. NAC has taken a long lease
on the central part of the site and is investing heavily in the
MG brand and its assets. 2007 will see the start of production of
MG cars both in China and the UK.
For Longbridge this will mean that MG TFs will soon be rolling
off the assembly lines once again, to be followed by further models
bearing the historic MG brand name.
